Halloween near Branford apartments

As you prepare for some tasty treats and fun tricks near your Branford apartments, you may be wondering how all this fun came about. The origin of Halloween goes back at least 3,000 years to Celtic celebration that started at sundown on October 31 and continued until sundown on November 1. It was similar to our modern New Year’s celebration. On this night, jack-o-lanterns were set out on porches and in windows to welcome deceased loved ones and as a protection against malevolent spirits. Lumps of burning coal were set inside the pumpkins as a source of light, but were later replaced by candles.

The pumpkin itself is believed to have originated in North America from seeds of related plants found in Mexico dating back to 7000 B.C. The name “pumpkin” originated from the Greek word for “large melon” and was changed by the French into “pompon” then by the English to “pumpion” and eventually by American colonists to “pumpkin.” Centuries before the pilgrims landed, Native American Indians used pumpkins as a staple in their diets. Halloween didn’t really catch on big in this country until the late 1800s, but once it did the rest is history. Halloween imagery includes themes of evil, death, the occult and mythical monsters; orange and black are its traditional colors; and homes are decorated with these symbols and colors throughout this season of the year. It has become a customary celebration for kids when they dress in costume, trek from house-to-house posing the question: “trick or treat?” Trick is a mostly idle threat to perform some type of mischief on the household the child is visiting if no treat is given. Often, homeowners ask children to perform a trick, sing a song, tell a story or describe their costume before handing out the treat.
