Goodspeed Musicals are dedicated to the preservation and advancement of musical theatre, and produces three musicals each season at Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam, Conn. near our Branford apartment rentals with additional productions at The Norma Terris Theater in Chester, Conn. Goodspeed Musicals is partially supported by the Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism which receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts. The Opera House was built in 1876 and is a riverside, Victorian gem set by the Connecticut River. It is worth the trip to take a ride just to see the seeting. The upcoming swinging, funny production of City of Angels is a spoof on 1940s Hollywood whodunit films featuring side-by-side stories about the real world of a detective fiction writer.  Winner of tons of Tony Awards, it’s a witty detective thriller with a jazzy score from the writer of the TV hit series MASH. It has been compared to a Bogey and Bacall movie come to life. The production is currently running at the Goodspeed Opera House. Tickets are available for performances running through Nov. 27.

If you are in the mood for a good old-fashioned musical comedy, you might want to consider buying tickets for “Hello My Baby.” You will be thrilled to watch the brand new Goodspeed version of this comic romance as the players sing and dance their way through class struggles, street gangs and more. It features the greatest hits of Berlin, Gershwin, Kern and others including  old-time favorite tunes ranging from “I’m Always Chasing Rainbows” to “Alice Blue Gown” and of course “Hello My Baby.” It will run from Nov. 3 through Nov. 27.

For anyone considering entering into the field of Music Directing, Goodspeed’s Music Institution offers high level training. Students receive hands-on experience in all aspects of theatre including the audition, rehearsal and orchestration processes. There are lectures given by industry experts who bring real-world success to their audiences. For those interested in the field of scenic painting, there are intensive introductory programs where participants receive expert instruction on everything from the creation of textured surfaces to cartooning, color mixing, squaring up, drop layout and wood graining.
