Spring Break at the Maritime Aquarium

By

Maritime AquariumSpring Vacation may be right around the corner, but due to tight budgets and other factors, many families are opting to have a “stay-cation” as opposed to heading to a tropical beach closer to the equator. Living in Morningside Gardens, which features beautiful apartments in Norwalk, there are many things you can do with the kids to keep them busy for the entire week of vacation this Spring, whether spending days on Long Island Sound or taking day trips to New York City. However, for those with children aged 6 to 9, one of the best options is to take them to the Maritime Aquarium for the Spring Vacation Adventure. Your kids will be exposed to fun and exiting educational programs, all with hands-on activities, and you won’t even have to travel far to get there.

The Spring Vacation Adventure at the Maritime Aquarium is five full days, April 12 to 16, of activities. Each day is different, and you can choose to sign up your kids for individual days or all five days. Here’s the lineup:

  • Monday, April 12 – Africa Through visits to the “African Underwater Safari” exhibit and an up-close encounter with African penguins, youngsters discover the amazing animals of the land and water worlds of Africa.
  • Tuesday, April 13 – Making Sense Through hands-on activities, participants learn about the five senses, and use such tools as hand lenses and microscopes to see up close.
  • Wednesday, April 14 – Sound Art & Science From photography to sculpture, painting to cartooning, create masterpieces to show off at an art show at the end of the day, to which parents are welcome to attend.
  • Thursday, April 15 – Pirates (ages 6-7) Children will study the real pirates of Long Island Sound. They learn how to tie sailor knots, make a knot bracelet, use a compass to find a hidden treasure and build a model pirate ship to take home. Jr. Aquarist (ages 8-9) Participate in hands-on activities designed to learn about the biodiversity and adaptations of marine life in Long Island Sound.
  • Friday, April 16 – Going Green Learn how we are connected and that what we all do in our yards affects Long Island Sound. Top off the day with a visit to our new “Go Fish!” exhibit.

Each program begins at 9:30 a.m. and concludes at 3:30 p.m. Parents are asked to send their kids with a bag lunch and a snack. For pricing and the application, be sure to visit www.maritimeaquarium.org/kids_programs
